Golden State Warriors given year to resolve League of Legends owner conflicts

Riot Games has given the Golden State Warriors, Cloud9 and Team Liquid one year from now to resolve conflicts of interest between ownership of the three teams, according to a Wednesday report from SportsBusiness Journal and confirmed by ESPN.

Jared Cook emerging as Carr’s clutch pass-catcher — With Amari Cooper’s tendencies to drop passes and Michael Crabtree’s inconsistent play, Carr established a new weapon in the Raiders arsenal in Cook. He had recently drawn praise from Carr for excelling on wide receiver-like routes and it showed Sunday. Cook hauled in 8 of 9 targets for a game-high 126 yards.

The last two weeks say it all. Seattlemanage to score 41 points and sweat it out until the final snap, and ithold the other team to 17 and sweat it out until the final snap. The Seahawks only managed a split in those games, as it turned out.

A week after sending the league a wake-up call by out-dueling Deshaun Watson and the Texans, the Seahawks got a wake-up call themselves from Washington, on their home field. Any number of plays, players, flags and mistakes could have gone the other way and gotten them the win.

From the podium after Thursday’s 40-17 win over the Titans, Roethlisberger was asked how his 299-yard, turnover-free performance felt. Roethlisberger said it felt good, then brought up the narrative from national media that he might be indifferent to the 2017 season.

Sixteen nuggets from the NBA’s most unlikely 16-game win streak

The Boston Celtics’ winning streak had recently reached double digits and, after a satisfying win over the Toronto Raptors, coach Brad Stevens was doing his best to downplay the growing hype around his team’s run.

According to data published by Fangraphs, no starting pitcher who qualified for the ERA title averaged under 20 seconds between pitches in 2017; the average was about 23.5 seconds. Pedro Baez of the Dodgers was the slowest-working reliever at 31.1 seconds between pitches.

Gabbert will get his second straight start for the Cardinals on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, his former team.

Arians said Drew Stanton’s injured right knee has improved, but “he’s still not as healthy as he was before.”

Look, we play eight on the road and eight at home every year, so it is what it is. I don’t think I’d necessarily be in any big rush to go back and do that again, but if that is where the game is scheduled, sure we’ll play it there. …

“It’s a lot. We spent a lot of time talking about altitude, about hydration, about food, water, about training elements like that. Much more so than let’s just say Denver. Pick another city that has some similarities, but it is quite bit different.

Braden Holtby made 29 saves to help Washington avoid its first set of back-to-back home losses this season.

From a projection standpoint, not much of what we know about the Brewers now has changed from what we thought we knew before the 2017 season. However, during the season, we saw a team that hung in the playoff chase until late in the season. Chances are, many of the members of the surprising 2017 roster are going to prove to be transitional players. You would hate if the Brewers went nuts with spending this winter, though you can understand the temptation.nike_patriots_1527

Seahawks, Russell Wilson reportedly violated concussion protocol

Wilson told reporters after the game he was fine after the hit and only stayed on the ground because he thought his jaw might be stuck.

“I think I was kind of like laying down on the ground for a second just trying to get my jaw,” Wilson said, “and I think Walt thought maybe I was injured or something like that. I told him I was good, I was good, and he said, ‘Come off the field.’

“I think Walt did a great job first of all. He made the smartest decision. I was fine, though, 100 percent fine. And then they finally went over through the whole concussion stuff and all that. We went through every question you could imagine, and I answered even some more for them just so they knew I was good, and then went back in there.”

The Seahawks will return to action when they host the Falcons for Monday Night Football at 8:30 p.m. ET in Week 11.

The other owners reportedly think that Jones’ public bashing of Goodell and threats to sue the NFL over giving Goodell an extension are creating a distraction and are a retaliation for the NFL upholding Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension.

“This is way over the top,” one league source said. “You don’t threaten to sue your business partners because you are pissed off that your running back got suspended. That’s not how business is conducted in the league. Jerry already had only a handful of guys backing him on this (calling for Goodell’s job), and he is isolating himself more and more by doing things this way. This isn’t how you try to get your way in the NFL. It’s not going to work.”

He added: “They did not whoop us up there, we just turned them loose. I take everything I say back.”

They haven’t finished last in either since the 1970 merger.

Kyle Soppe — Jimmy Butler, Minnesota Timberwolves

His price is down $900 from opening night, and I’m taking that discount to the DFS bank — especially after he proved his worth on Friday (25 points, seven assists and five rebounds in 38 minutes against the Thunder). I’m encouraged by Butler’s role on his new team, as his average distance of field goal attempt is as low as it has been since the 2012-13 season, something that elevates his floor. His well-rounded skill set and a matchup with a bottom-10 defense in terms of efficiency give him a solid ceiling as well. Go ahead and start your success Monday with Butler penciled in.

But the view from 30,000 feet says this series is starting to develop that special feel of one that people might be talking about for a while.

Because Cooper is only 23 and has little injury baggage vs. the 28-year-old JPP, it would be a little more sane to include Raiders end Mario Edwards Jr. for Giants wideout Sterling Shepard as the necessary undercard in the deal. But helping a bad passing defense and a bad passing offense would be a win-win.

The players sat and stayed for 15 minutes, talking hockey, joking about how Nick and Anthony grew up cheering for the L.A. Kings but would make an exception for the new NHL team in their hometown.

Miami was pegged as a breakout offense in the preseason, so imagine the horror after being shut out for the second time in seven games. The Dolphins are last in points per game (13.1) and yards per game (252.4).

Your guide to World Series Game 6: Verlander aims to seal Series in L.A.

After the game had been over for roughly 45 minutes, Alex Bregman passed the time in the wee hours of Monday morning by doing waves of interviews. He relived the biggest hit of his career and ruminated on the 10 most thrilling innings of his life.

Yet the young third baseman didn’t grasp the full magnitude of what the Houston Astros had done — not until he spoke 10 simple words.

“We’ve got Justin Verlander going for us in two days.”

Video of Luck’s first practices showed him throwing tentatively and slowly. More than a week into his return to the practice fields, the Colts tweeted a video that showed Luck throwing deep passes much more comfortably.

The deep passes look smooth, but what the video doesn’t show is Luck throwing with much velocity. That, and Luck’s confidence in his shoulder, will be the final steps before he makes his return.

It’s hard to see how dealing their best offensive lineman makes the Texans and Deshaun Watson better as they chase a third straight AFC South crown.
Seahawks general manager John Schneider confirmed that the trade has been agreed upon but said it had not been fully finalized yet. The trade comes one day before the NFL’s Tuesday trade deadline and one day after the Texans lost to the Seahawks in Seattle.

Bryant, in his best days as a Steeler, was a monstrous deep threat and Randy Mossed defensive backs in the red zone. Now, in what are his worst days, he has failed to round out his game beyond those two tricks.

Because the Steelers’ attack has become more run-heavy to complement a more dominant defense, that lack of progress didn’t cut it. The Steelers needed someone else to do the dirty work and make big plays in tough situations to take some of the burden off Brown. They needed someone to win matchups but also be satisfied with being a strong additional blocker for Bell.canadiens_402_dc0e4496f1e6c64e-180x180

The greatest baseball team you’ve never heard of

Imagine living on an island where incredibly talented players do things on a baseball field that are unseen to the outside world. Consider what it must feel like to know how good you are but know you will never be rewarded like a superstar, or acclaimed as an All-Star. Think how you would feel if you never got your due.

Meet Lourdes Gurriel.

He is the 60-year-old man in the gold jacket sitting in the Houston Astros’ family section at Minute Maid Park. And he is smiling because that dream that was out of reach to him came true for his son, Houston first baseman Yusiel (Yuli) Gurriel.

As it happened all three had everyone’s chances on the line until the final whistle. I mainly focused on the attacks of the teams that needed a goal and on the defensive plays of the teams that needed not to concede. It was challenging to say the least but a great way to show all the drama at once.”

Hyperbole is the drug of choice these days in the sports media but the U.S. Men’s National Team failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup was a disaster for Fox Sports. The World Cup is a momentum tournament over its 64 broadcasts and the U.S. broadcaster needs the national team in the tournament because it establishes a huge audience early on for those games. It also attracts viewers who are not traditional soccer watchers. Here was ESPN’s viewership for the U.S. games during the 2014 World Cup:

After he was born, the youngest of their five children, they stuck him in a Red Wings onesie. And it was an “out-of-body experience,” Mick says, when Danny decided to sign with Detroit after his junior season at Western Michigan, where he was defense partners with Witkowski. Matt Forte ‘surprised’ Jets didn’t run ball more in rain

The New York Jets failed to hold a fourth-quarter lead for the third straight week. In driving rain Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, running Matt Forte believes the Jets should have run the ball more to preserve that lead.

The Jets called 37 pass plays to 21 running plays in Sunday’s 25-20 loss. Forte saw just four carries for seven yards while Bilal Powell took 14 totes for 33 yards.

While running the ball keeps the clock moving, receivers have an advantage in the rain where defensive backs relying on a quick change of direction to stay with wideouts — who know where their routes are headed — are more apt to slipping on the slick surface. Plus, it wasn’t the play-calling that caused two missed field goals or a muffed punt that led to three points.

Instead, Dunlap snatched it away with 6:58 left, putting Cincinnati ahead to stay in a game featuring four lead changes. The Colts drove to a fourth-and-4 at the Cincinnati 48-yard line, and Brissett was hit as he threw an incompletion with 1:18 to go.

Dalton was 17 of 29 for 243 yards with a pair of touchdowns. The Bengals’ running game had little success against a defense that allowed the Jaguars to score on their first four possessions a week earlier, managing only 58 yards.

Colts tight end Jack Doyle had 12 catches for 121 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown. Brissett was 25 of 39 for 233 yards with the one pivotal interception and four sacks.

Athletes and celebrities at Game 6 of the World Series

Roush Fenway awarded two MarCom Awards: Roush Fenway Racing has been recognized for outstanding achievement by the prestigious MarCom Awards. The team has been awarded a pair of MarCom Platinum Awards for its marketing and communications efforts in 2016. The organization received a Platinum Award in the category of ‘Social Media Campaign’ for its innovative #RFRTruckin social campaign. In addition, Roush Fenway was awarded a Platinum Award in the ‘Social Media Branding’ category for its Social ‘Jack’ Icon program.’

On Sunday, with Marshawn Lynch suspended and in rainy conditions, the Raiders ran the ball just 14 times on 63 offensive plays from scrimmage, with just two running plays after halftime in what was a competitive game into the fourth quarter.

Huestis was an unusual pick in the 2014 draft, becoming the NBA’s first ever “domestic draft and stash” player. The Thunder selected him in the first round, which awards a guaranteed contract, but Huestis, in an agreement with the Thunder, didn’t sign it, instead joining the franchise’s D-League affiliate for his first season.

The Thunder elected to not exercise the $2.2 million team option for a few reasons, a primary one being the lack of evidence on Huestis and his fit with the roster. Before this season, he’d appeared in only seven total games in two years. Future roster and luxury tax implications also factored in, with the Thunder’s planning for the hopeful re-signing of both Paul George and Carmelo Anthony. Committing to pay Huestis $2.2 million next season could translate to as much as $7 million with relation to the tax.

“In all honesty I try not to think about it. At the end of the day, it’s my job to go play basketball. It’s the organization’s decision and they decided to not pick it up, but that’s not something I’m focusing on too much, just because I know to get out there, play basketball and the rest will take care of itself,” Huestis said after Thunder’s 110-91 win over Milwaukee.blues-010

Former Ravens, Titans WR Derrick Mason arrested, charged with assault

Mason, 43, played in the NFL for 15 years, spending most of his career with the Titans (1997-2004) and Ravens (2005-10). He topped 1,000 yards receiving eight times and set an NFL record in 2000 with 2,690 all-purpose yards, which has since been broken.

Mason co-hosts a sports talk show on 102.5 The Game in Nashville, which released a statement early Tuesday saying it was aware of the incident.

According to ESPN, the Bengals had signed off on the trade and relayed that information to the league office at 3:55 p.m. ET, but the Browns did not get the paperwork in before the 4 p.m. deadline.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported the Browns were willing to part with a second- and third-round pick. In addition, Cleveland attempted to appeal to the league to get the trade completed with the proper paperwork after the deadline, but the NFL declined.

Furthermore it came out later that the Browns sent their signed paperwork over to the Bengals assuming the Bengals would sign the document and then send it in with both signatures. The Bengals only sent theirs in with their own signature and not the Browns.

The complaint from Forte feels like a frustrated veteran who feels like he’s being underutilized. Perhaps a frustrated veteran who might want to be traded before Tuesday’s deadline?

“I only had four carries this game, so I don’t really think we ran the ball enough with the weather being the way it was,” Forte said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “I think that kind of hurt us.”

Amazon will stream ‘Thursday Night Football’ in 2017. Here’s what you need to know

In 2016, the NFL and Twitter collaborated to let the social media service live stream 10 Thursday Night Football games. For the 2017 season, Amazon will own the rights to the games, according to Recode.

After averaging 35.5 points per game through the team’s first two games, the offense has averaged only 13.3 points per game over the team’s current losing streak. Oakland is 6-16 SU in its last 22 night games.

Thursday night’s total is set at 47 points. The OVER is 6-1 in Oakland’s last seven games at home.

With the way the Chiefs played in their first five games of the season, it would seem like an overreaction to worry too much about last week’s dud performance against Pittsburgh. Kansas City should be much more comfortable this week against a struggling opponent that it has enjoyed plenty of recent success against.

For some context, the Packers are currently fifth in passing yards allowed, though their ranking drops to 17th in opponents’ passer rating and they are 15th in pass DVOA. Last season in those three measures, the team ranked 31st, 26th, and 23rd, respectively.

In fact, with Watson under center, I might go so far as to say that the Texans offense is downright innovative right now. Bill O’Brien is drawing up plays you don’t typically see run at this level. All this after years of frequently watching Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Mallett, Case Keenum, Brian Hoyer, T.J. Yates, Brandon Weeden, Brock Osweiler, and Tom Savage struggle to string together more than a scoring drive or two each week.

In 2016, Indianapolis had a turnover ratio of -5. The entire secondary produced seven interceptions with linebacker Akeem Ayers adding an eighth.

Hooker is responsible for three of the six. He is tied for the NFL lead in interceptions through the first four games.lakers_049
